Dubbed “Exchange by Promoting Quality Education, Research and Training in South and South-East Asia (EXPERTS II),“ the scholarships funded by the European Union through the Erasmus Mundus Action 2, offer the opportunity to study in any of the seven European EXPERTS II partner universities.

In accordance with the EMA2 call, the objective of the project is to facilitate the new collaborations between Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from the least developed countries in South and Southeast Asia and EU, and also to reinforce the existing cooperation in the region by exchanging information in science and policy issues while sharing key issues of sustainable development in academic cooperation. The project will establish an innovative framework for capacity development of junior faculty staff, undergraduates, postgraduates, and postdoc researchers through training and upgrading their skills in specified fields of study through a scheme of structured mobility between 7 EU partners and 13 universities in South and Southeast Asia (SSEA) from 10 countries.

This project places an emphasis on research and cooperation, establishing collaborative framework for human resource development through training and upgrading the skills of junior faculty staff, undergraduates, postgraduates and postdoc researchers by specified learning objectives in the field of engineering and technology, agricultural sciences, environmental studies, business-management and social sciences. The implementation of individual mobilities, with special emphasis to research initiatives, will provide students from SSEA regions with mobility for a broader choice of opportunities for study experience in EU higher education institutions. We anticipate to further strengthen our cooperation and to develop new areas of cooperation in harmonizing innovative research as well as continuous actions for transparency and comparability between the different HE systems in EU and SSEA countries under EM Action 2. By applying ECTS standards to the exchanges, the transparency and recognition of studies and qualifications will be improved and the know-how on the Bologna process disseminated.

The consortium has chosen to include 4 countries from group A (Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan) and 6 countries from group B (China, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Thailand). All together, the consortium consists of 13 universities from SSEA and 7 universities from EU allowing the coverage of as many subject areas as possible. The associates are chosen as they are the network of universities (such as in Asia- SEARCA and in Europe: COIMBRA Group, AGRINATURA), which ensure the effective dissemination of information about the project.

The European study posts are Georg-August Universität Göttingen in Germany, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, Masaryk University in Czech Republic, Politecnico di Torino in Italy, Universidad Santiago de Compostela in Spain, University of Turku in Finland, and Uppsala University in Sweden.

Applications will be accepted until Feb. 10, 2012. About 100 scholarships will be awarded in June in time for enrolment.

It is open to graduating students or graduates of public high schools located in NCR; Batangas, Benguet, Bulacan, Camarines Sur, Cavite, Laguna, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Quezon, Rizal, Tarlac, and Zambales in Luzon; Cebu, Iloilo and Negros Occidental in Visayas; and Davao, General Santos, and Misamis Oriental in Mindanao. Applicants must have a fourth year weighted average of at least 88 percent in the second or third grading period. They should belong to families whose annual household income is at most P150,000.00.

Scholars may enroll in any of the following courses leading to a baccalaureate degree such as Computer Science; Information Technology; Information Management; Electronics and Communications Engineering; Computer Engineering; Civil Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Elementary Education; Secondary Education major in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or English; Accountancy; and Business Administration major in Accountancy. They are also encouraged to attend schools/universities near their residence.

SM Foundation has 1,100 scholars every year enrolled in 70 partner schools throughout the country. While most of the scholars are financed by the Foundation, there are also scholars that are sponsored by its partners.

Apart from the tuition, SM Foundation will shoulder the books and transportation costs. Scholars will also be given the opportunity to work in SM Supermalls, Department Stores, Supermarkets, Hypermarkets, or in Save More branches during their semestral or Christmas break.

1. Single lender and single monthly payment: When you opt for Federal loan consolidation, you can take out a loan of a large sum from the US Department of Education and use the proceeds in paying back all your loans. Instead of making multiple payments to multiple lenders, you just have to make a single monthly payment to the US Department of Education.

2. No minimum loan amount to qualify: Often you will see that you won’t be allowed to take out a debt consolidation loan without a specific outstanding balance on your loans. Fortunately this is not the case with federal student loan consolidation as you will be offered the loan with any amount of debt.

3. Flexible repayment options: You can repay your debt by opting for any of the repayment options that will be offered to you by the government. The most common repayment options available are Income Contingent Repayment Plan and Income Based Repayment Plan. All such plans have been designed to meet the changing needs of the student borrowers and hence you can even switch from one loan to another.

4. Revised monthly payments: By taking out the Federal debt consolidation loan you can ease off the strain from your wallet as the monthly payments that you now need to pay will be much lesser than what you were paying before. The minimum monthly payment that you need to pay will be much lower than the combined payments on all the Federal education loans.

What loans can you consolidate through a Federal debt consolidation loan?

You can consolidate subsidized Federal Stafford loans, Direct subsidized consolidation loans, Direct Subsidized loans, Federal Insured Student Loans, Guaranteed Student loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans (TEACH that is converted from TEACH Grants) and many more. However loans taken out from a private lender that is not guaranteed by the government cannot be consolidated through such a loan.

Thus, if you want to eliminate your student loan debt burden and protect your credit score from being hit, you must opt for loan consolidation. If your loans are not government loans, you can still contact a private company and get them bundled into a single monthly payment. You will tend to save more money through Federal loan consolidation.

The Undergraduate Scholarship Programs of the DoST, implemented by the Science Education Institute (DoST-SEI), are offered yearly to deserving students who wish to pursue four or five-year courses in priority science and technology.

Scholarships Available
The department has two scholarship programs – the Merit Scholarships and the Republic Act No. 7687 or the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994.

*RA 7687 S&T Scholarships – for applicants who belong to families with low socio-economic status
*DOST-SEI Merit Scholarships – for applicants regardless of their families socio-economic status, to pay a non-refundable fee of P200.00

Both programs aim to produce and develop high-quality human resources for the country’s Science and Technology (S&T) and Research Development (RD) efforts.

Applicants for the Merit Scholarship must belong to the upper five percent of the high school graduating class. The RA 7687, on the other hand, is open to poor but talented students also belonging to the top five percent of the high school graduating class. High school graduates who have not taken any college units may also apply. To date, more than 20,000 scholars have already graduated from the program.

Wiith the fast-paced advancement of technology and the increasing demands of globalization, there is a need to increase the pool of expertise in S&T. Through the S&T Scholarships, DoST-SEI helps contribute in providing human resources that will beef up attainment of the national R&D priority thrusts.
